David Neel Photography

David Neel is a professional photographer and hereditary Northwest Coast Native artist. He apprenticed as a photographer in Kansas and Texas before returning to Vancouver; he now photographs contemporary Native Indian culture in the Canada and the USA. He has published two photography books about Pacific Indigenous culture, and his third is in progress; he has had solo exhibitions in major public institutions, such as: the Smithsonian Institution - NMAI, the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography and the National Library of Canada.

North West Native Art

Our website represents the art of Northwest Coast Native artist David Neel, who descends from a long line of traditional Pacific Northwest Indian artists, including: Dave Neel Senior, Ellen Neel, Mungo Martin and Charlie James. In the 1980's he apprenticed with Kwakwakwak'awakw masters Wayne Alfred and Beau Dick, and for 30 years he's followed the Kwakiutl tradition of carving masks, totem poles, canoes, rattles and bent-wood boxes. He spent years studying the various Pacific Native art styles, including: Coast Salish art, Haida art and Tsimshian art before developing his personal vision of contemporary Northwest Coast Indian art.
